Sinus is the
term given to anatomical cavities that exist within our body. There
is one in the region of the cheekbone that is termed the Maxillary
Sinus.
We all desire to be attractive. The attributes such as a perfect
smile, pretty face, glowing skin, and toned figure are the features
for which we yearn. Most can agree that one of the simplest ways
to enhance your look and self-confidence is with a beautiful smile.
Over a period of time, the jawbone associated with missing teeth atrophies
or is reabsorbed. This often leaves a condition in which there is
poor quality and quantity of bone suitable for placement of dental
implants. In these situations, most patients are not candidates for
placement of dental implants. In such a situation if the patient wants
Implants it becomes impossible to insert the implant.
A procedure which only applies to patients who want implants in the
upper molar areas, the sinus lift, also known as a sinus augmentation,
is employed to increase the amount of bone in the upper molar areas
for dental implants. After allowing six to nine months for the bone
graft to become solid and mature, dental implants can be placed. It
is a very specialized procedure carried out under strict asepsis.
Implants may be inserted at the same stage or at a later date depending
on the situation.
A small, oval window is opened in the bone. The membrane lining the
sinus on the other side of the window separates your sinus from your
jaw. This membrane is gently pushed up and away from your jaw. Granules
of bone-graft material are then packed into the space where the sinus
was. The amount of bone used will vary, but usually several millimeters
of bone is added above the jaw.
This procedure involves placing bone-graft material in the maxillary
sinus to increase the height and width of the alveolus. The procedure
involves placement of a bone graft that may be obtained from your/the
patient’s body (autogenous bone) or sometime may be synthetic
bone substitutes, which can stimulate bone formation. These surgeries
are performed in the out-office surgical suite under I.V. sedation
or general anesthesia, and may last around 1-2 hours. After discharge
full rest for one day is recommended, and normal and non-hyper activity
may be resumed after a week.
The entire procedure is carried out from inside the mouth &
there is no visible scar on the face, nor does it alter the facial
topography in any way. There are generally no attending post-operative
complications if all the given instructions are followed. After
a sinus lift, you need to wait several months for the bony material
to harden and integrate with your jaw. Once this happens, the implants
will be placed.
There is no documented risk regarding the procedure but the attending
risks after any surgical procedure such as infection or stitch opening
should be taken care of.
The bone graft procedures are referred to as sinus lift, ridge-augmentation
and nerve-repositioning procedures.
Nerve Repositioning:
The inferior alveolar nerve, which gives feeling to the lower lip
and chin, may need to be moved in order to make room for placement
of dental implants to the lower jaw. These procedures may be performed
separately or together, depending upon the individual's condition
If larger quantities of bone are needed, especially when there is
an extensive area of loss of height and width of the jaw (bone atrophy),
it can also be necessary to take bone from the iliac crest. In more
extensive situations, a greater quantity of bone can be attained from
the hip or the outer aspect of the tibia at the knee.
