A
frenum is a fold of tissue or muscle connecting the lips, cheek
or tongue to the jawbone. A frenectomy is the surgical removal of
a frenum in the mouth. It is a simple procedure where either part
or all of the frenum in question is removed in order to return a
healthy balance to the mouth. A frenum is a fold of tissue that
passes from the movable lip or cheek to the gum. When a frenum is
positioned in such a way as to interfere with the normal alignment
of teeth or results in pulling away of the gum from the tooth surface
causing recession, these are often removed using a surgical process.
Side effects of surgery may include minor discomfort, possible bleeding
and in rare instances infection.
In addition, there is another frenum under the tongue. Some people
have a large frenum that limits tongue movement and can interfere
with speech. If this frenum is attached too close to the end of
the tongue it can adversely affect swallowing and speech.
The condition of limited tongue mobility is called ankyloglossia,
or tongue-tied. A lingual frenectomy removes the fold of tissue
under the tongue. A frenectomy can take several weeks to heal completely.
If the operation does not solve the problem, it may need to be redone.
Redoing a lingual frenectomy is somewhat common. Few labial frenectomies
need repeating.
To complete a frenectomy, a surgeon can use a scalpel or a laser.
A laser minimizes bleeding, reduces the need for sutures and causes
less postoperative pain. If a scalpel is used a suture will be needed
after surgery. People receiving a laser frenectomy must remain completely
still during the operation, so younger children may require general
anesthesia. In older children and adults, the procedure can be done
with local anesthesia, with or without nitrous oxide. The surgery
itself takes very little time, and can be completed in as little
as 10 to 15 minutes.
