Fluoride is a naturally occurring
compound that protects teeth from cavities . Water fluoridation
is recommended by leading national and international health organizations.
Most water suppliers in most countries add fluoride
to their water and are an adequate source of systemic (ingested) fluoride.
Fluoride is also commonly found in toothpastes and mouthwashes.
In the past, cavities were a fact of life. But over the last several
years tooth decay has been reduced dramatically due to fluoride. Fluoride
is a great cavity fighter-no matter what your age. When fluoride reaches
your teeth, it is absorbed into the acid damaged enamel. It helps
repair the enamel and prevent tooth decay. Research has shown that
properly used Phos-Flur mouthwash (1.1% Sodium Fluoride and Acidulated
Phosphate Gel) reduced decalcification from well over 20% to fewer
than 2%. This is a ten-fold reduction in the chance of having scars
on a patient's teeth. At bedtime, rinse for one minute and spit.
The Use Of A Fluoride Gel, in a study of orthodontic practices across
the country, it has been found that well over 20% of orthodontic patients
have some type of decalcification of their teeth that can be seen
after their braces have been removed. Decalcification is a permanent
white or yellow scaring of the teeth. Braces do not cause it, but
by the dental plaque as braces give plaque more areas to accumulate.
The bacteria in the plaque produce acid that begins to eat through
the enamel of the teeth.
Fluoride Makes a Difference:
Fluoride is beneficial for adults as well as children. Research has
shown that fluoride reduces cavities by up to 40% in children and
35% in adults.*
Fluoride is Safe: Numerous studies over the past 60 years have shown that fluoride
at recommended levels is not only safe, but provides significant health
benefits.*
Fluoride Helps Children and Adults: Children benefit from fluoride both systemically
(by ingesting fluoride) as their teeth are forming and topically
(the fluoride that gets on their teeth) to keep teeth strong.
Topical fluoride helps people of all ages. Fluoride is the only known
substance that will actually strengthen teeth and make them harder.
Fluoride works best in children while teeth are forming. This helps
both primary (baby) and permanent teeth. The process is followed until
all permanent teeth have fully erupted. Choose carefully the fluoridated
toothpaste designed especially for children. Fluoride is also helpful
for patients with sensitive teeth. A consistent daily use of topical
fluoride will often dramatically decrease tooth sensitivity to hot
and cold substance
When are Fluoride Supplements needed? If your family uses well water or bottled water, you should
have your water tested to see if there is adequate natural fluoride,
or if a fluoride supplement is needed. The information can also be
obtained from local water suppliers. If adequate fluoride is not present,
your child may need a prescription fluoride supplement from your dentist.
Fluoridated toothpastes and rinses provide topical fluoride. Additional
fluoride treatments are applied as needed by your dentist during regular
check-ups. Once systemic fluoride is absorbed via the gastrointestinal
tract, the blood supply distributes it throughout the entire body.
Most fluoride not excreted is deposited in bones and hard tissues
like teeth.
Caution: Drinking excessively fluoridated water
can cause dental fluorosis , a harmless cosmetic
discoloring or mottling of the enamel, visible by chalky white specks
and lines or pitted and brown stained enamel on developing teeth.
Dental fluorosis Young children, aged 0 to six years, should not use full strength
fluoride toothpaste and should only take fluoride tablets if prescribed
by a dentist. Too much fluoride at this age may cause their adult
teeth (which are forming underneath) to stain. This is called dental
fluorosis.
Dental fluorosis cannot develop after teeth are fully formed and does
not affect the function of the teeth. Dental fluorosis can occur in
areas both with and without water fluoridation.
Dental fluorosis looks like fine pearly-white mottling, flecking or
lines on the surface of the teeth; it is usually very hard to see.
Other things like can also cause mottling of the teeth:
Injury to the teeth
Certain medications
Childhood infections.
If fluoride is not the cause of staining of the teeth, then it is
not called dental fluorosis. WHO and local organizations of most countries around the world
recommend water fluoridation.
