Sealants

Dental Sealants are clear or white plastic coatings that stick or bond to the surfaces of teeth. These are filled in the little ridges on the chewing part of child’s teeth, molar and premolars, to protect and seal the tooth from food and plaque that cause decay. They are easy to apply and typically last for several years. Some of these sealants do release fluoride as well. A combination of sealants (on teeth) and fluoride (in water or toothpaste) will virtually eliminate decay in the permanent teeth of many children.

Children with newly erupted posterior teeth benefit the most with sealants as these teeth are at the highest risk of developing pit and fissure caries. The molars have very deep grooves and pits on the chewing surfaces. This is where food and bacteria hide and form cavities. Adults also do benefit from the application of sealants. At some given point of time sealants worn out particularly chewing on abrasive foods, and the same can be reapplied.

How are sealants put on?


1. The tooth is cleaned.	2. The tooth is dried, and cotton is put around the tooth so it stays dry.	3. A solution is put on the tooth that makes the surface a little rough. (It is easier for the sealant to stick to a slightly rough surface.)

4. The tooth is rinsed and dried. Then new cotton is put around the tooth so it stays dry.	5. The sealant is applied in liquid form and hardens in a few seconds.	6. The sealant is in place.

Dental Sealants:

Are applied by a dentist or dental therapist
Do not require injections
Do not require drilling.
Are painless
Take a few minutes to apply to the teeth
Fill and block up the small pits and grooves in the teeth to prevent decay
Can last from two to seven years, but may last even up to 15 years.

Sealants are applied onto the teeth to protect teeth and prevent tooth decay
Sealants fill up the small grooves on your teeth that are hard to clean
Regular cleaning of teeth, eating a healthy diet, limiting sugary foods and drinking plenty of tap water also helps to prevent tooth decay.
