Dr. Bernard Jankelson, the
founder of neuromuscular dentistry was fond of stating "If
it as been measured it is a fact, if not it is an opinion”.
Neuromuscular dentistry
is the art and science of using the relaxed position of the muscles
of the head and neck to place the jaw into an optimal physiologic
position. It is also used in finding the optimal jaw position before
restorative dentistry and greatly increases the longevity of restorations
and natural dentition.
It may sound complicated, but it is really quite simple.
If the bite is incorrect, even if the smile looks attractive, trouble
is not far behind. Twenty-five years of research and clinical
experience have shown this technique to be effective in treating
patients with various levels of head and neck pain.
If you suffer from headaches; facial pain; numbness in you fingers
and arm; congestion or stuffiness of the ears; clicking or grating
sounds in the jaw joints; pain or soreness around the jaw joints;
limited movement or locking jaw; neck, shoulder or back pain; worn,
chipping or cracked teeth; pain in teeth that seems to move around;
cracking, chipping or breaking dental restorations; and unexplained
loose teeth, contact us to facilitate your appointment with the
specialist on our panel as to how the neuromuscular approach to
your dentistry can enhance your life.
Neuromuscular dentists understand that your hard and soft tissues
have a complex relationship and work to make that relationship a
harmonious one. Neuromuscular dentists understand the necessity
for including the power source (muscles) and the controls (nerves)
which create the movement, pressures, and function of the mouth.
Electromyography is used to measure your jaw's muscle function in
both its stressed and relaxed positions, and will also measure the
jaw-to-skull relationship to see if there is a structural imbalance.
Sonography is used to record jaw joint sounds to detect any abnormalities.
Additionally, x-rays of the jaw may be taken to help evaluate the
condition and positioning of the joint. Bioelectronics measurement
of muscle physiology and jaw movement can pinpoint specific problems
in the TMD/complex restoration case that we may not detect conventionally.
The
process involves using a sophisticated computerized calculation to
record and interpret Temporomandibular
joint(TMJ) sounds, masticatory (chewing) muscle activity (EMGS)
and the path of movement the jaw follows in function. This physiologic
position for the jaw, combined with Tomography
(specialized jaw joint x-ray) to check the most relaxed position helps
determine the best bite for comfort and aesthetics.
Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) is also referred to as
Myofascial Pain Dysfunction (MPD) or temporomandibular joint syndrome
(TMJ). TMJ/TMD patients often shuttle from doctor to doctor in search
of a solution to their discomforts that are not easily remedied,
or even diagnosed. For the TMD patients the confusion is already
compounded due to a lack of a cohesive definition readily available
from the dental and medical professions.
A precision oral appliance is fabricated and worn by the patient.
Since most pain in the TMD patient arises from injured or unhealthy
muscle and function, it’s normalization can greatly reduce
pain. When the rest position is correctly identified, appliance
therapy can rapidly reduce TMD symptoms including headaches, clicking
and popping joints, ringing ears (tinnitus), jaw pain, and a locking
jaw. When symptoms become reduced or disappeared, the appliance
becomes a guide for permanent stabilization procedures that can
include orthodontics or prosthetic and reconstructive dentistry.
In most cases, it may be possible to achieve without surgery or
braces.
The
K7 Evaluation System provides the dental clinician or researcher
with three distinctly different technologies for measuring, displaying
and storing objective data on physiologic and anatomical status
and function. This objective data enhances the doctor’s diagnostic
and treatment considerations with information not previously available.
The K7 Evaluation System comes with a compact housing that can be
plugged in to the serial port of virtually any PC type computer, desktop
or laptop. To learn more about neuromuscular dentistry visit Myotronics.Com.
