A regular visit to your
dentist is more like professionally guided in-office improvement
in oral hygiene. But some times your visit to dentist is dictated
by periodontal problems. Gum treatment is the treatment of active
gum and jawbone disease. Since there are different stages of gum
disease (from gingivitis to advanced periodontitis), there are different
levels of treatment. In some cases, the patient may be referred
to a Periodontist.
As a matter of routine, Scaling and Root Planing is non-surgical treatment
for periodontal disease. By using special instruments, bacteria and
infection is removed from the unhealthy deep pockets around the teeth
below the gum line. The plaque
and tarter that has accumulated on the tooth is removed. Healthy
gums are firmly attached to the teeth leaving no pockets
for bacteria to hide and cause any disease.
However, Periodontitis (Gum
Disease) is the end result of a complex interaction between
the bacteria (or plaque) that accumulate on tooth surfaces and your
own body’s efforts to fight this bacterial infection. When there
are high levels of bacteria in the spaces between your teeth and gums,
enzymes are released by your own body’s defense mechanism to
fight the bacteria. These enzymes can destroy gum tissue and bone
that support your teeth.
Oral Medications
A new medication called Periostat specifically combats
periodontal infection by bolstering your body's immune response to
bacteria that cause periodontal disease. Periostat®
is the first medication that suppresses these enzymes, thereby reducing
tissue damage. When used along with scaling and root planing (a professional
tooth cleaning procedure), Periostat® can help slow, stop, and
sometimes reverse periodontal damage.
Don’t take Periostat® if you are pregnant or breast feeding,
as it may cause harm to your unborn child or infant. Don't take Periostat®
if you are allergic to tetracycline antibiotics.
Antibacterial Therapy
It is well established that bacteria cause many cases of periodontal
disease. That’s why antibiotic therapy is widely used today
to help eliminate these harmful bacteria. This treatment includes
oral medication, locally applied antibiotics, such as ATRIDOX®
(doxycycline hyclate) 10%, and rinses that can help fight bacterial
infection.
Gum Surgery
When periodontitis progresses deep enough in the gum and tooth, a
specialist called a periodontal surgeon sometimes needs to perform
surgery to repair the gum. He or she uses various surgical techniques
to repair the damage. Surgery
may be done on soft tissue or bone to help the healing process.
LASER GUM TREATMENT
Laser Gum
Treatment involves using the state-of-the-art Nd YAG
Laser that often allows gentle gum procedures to be completed without
open periodontal surgery. Conservative laser procedures are fast,
easy and virtually painless.
The dental laser can be used for many soft tissue procedures in place
of a scalpel. The dental laser has many advantages over scalpel use.
The dental laser uses an invisible energy beam to perform soft tissue
procedures more efficiently and comfortably for our patients.
The dental laser offers little to no bleeding, swelling, infection
or post-operative discomfort and also eliminates the need for most
sutures (stitches). We find the dental laser to be very effective
in increasing the quality of dental care.
