Kid Dental Care

When should my child first see a dentist?
The dental associations in most countries have reason to recommend children to see a dentist 6 months after the eruption of the first tooth, which usually is around age 1.  But in the practical experience it has been found children at this age are really too young. Hence the general, unwritten consensus of dentists recommends the regular dental visits to start closer to age 3, unless parents prior to this age notice some abnormalities. Starting children very young can also prevent many dental problems by early intervention. Children have unique dental needs. No teeth, to baby teeth, to losing teeth, to permanent teeth, typically occur in about the first 12-14 years. That is a lot of change. Care is necessary to ensure your child passes through these phases in life and enters adulthood with a strong, healthy mouth.

Don't Wait Until It Hurts
Periodontal (Gum) disease is painless. It affects 87% of the population, and often victims are unaware. There are warning signs for you to be aware.
  • Do your gums bleed when you brush your teeth or toothpick between them?
  • Are your gums red, swollen, or tender?
  • Are your gums pulling away from your teeth?
  • Do you see pus between your teeth and gums when the gums are pressed?
  • Are your permanent teeth loose or separating?
  • Is there any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite?
  • Is there any change in the fit of your partial dentures?
  • Do you have bad breath?

If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, act now and keep your teeth for a lifetime.
Crisis TreatmentMany people don't see a dentist on a regular basis. They go only when they feel they have a problem. This can be categorized as "crisis treatment" as opposed to "preventive treatment". These patients consider saving money, but eventually end up paying many times over in treatment costs, like root canal treatment and crown. The reason for this is that most dental problems like tooth decay are preventable by fillings by early intervention. These problems don't have any symptoms until they reach the advanced stages.

Dental Decay - Cavities and Prevention
Fluoride has been a great benefit to patients of all ages in helping prevent dental decay. Regular brushing and flossing lowers the chance of developing " cavities ." However, the most decay-prone areas of teeth are the grooves and depressions on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, which require further preventive care.

Some Dental problems are easy to see - Plaque
One of the easiest problems to spot is a build-up of plaque. Plaque is the soft, sticky layer of bacteria, which is constantly forming on the teeth. Usually it is invisible to the naked eye, but when a person is not brushing adequately, it can build up to where it appears to be a thick whitish coating on the teeth at the gum line. If not removed, it can lead to gum disease.

Bad Breath and Gum Disease
Bad breath can have several causes. By far, the most common causes relate to dental problems, primarily gum disease and tooth decay. The first step is making sure the mouth is free from infection (decay and gum disease are infections). Next, home care needs to be reviewed to make sure that all sources of bacteria are controlled, from brushing and flossing techniques to tongue cleaning. Occasionally, a medical consultation is necessary to rule out sinus or digestive disorder. If that is still not the reason, there are special mouth rinses that are made to neutralize the compounds that you smell. Gum disease is treatable and preventable

Need for Caps, crowns, inlays, and onlays:Crowns, inlays, and onlays are all made in a laboratory. These are all ways to fix tooth that has been damaged by fracture or decay. Caps and crowns are the same thing. To place these restorations, two visits are needed. At the first visit, the tooth is prepared, the impression is taken, and a temporary restoration is made and placed. At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the permanent restoration is placed. For cavities that are a little larger, fillings are harder to place well, particularly white fillings. For that reason, an inlay, which is made outside the mouth and cemented in place, will work better and last longer.

If part of the remaining tooth structure is weak, then the restoration can be made to wrap around that part. This supports the weak section and prevents it from breaking. If only part of the tooth needs to be protected, then it is called an onlay. If the entire tooth needs to be covered, it is a crown.

White fillings and silver fillings
In some instances, silver fillings (amalgams) they are even better. Silver fillings just fill the hole in the tooth. If the hole (cavity) is large or near an edge of the tooth, the walls that are left can be thin and weak. With repeated use, thin and weak parts of teeth will crack and break.

White filings do more than just fill the hole. They actually bond to the tooth structure. In this way, they make the tooth stronger. These bonded fillings can prevent teeth from cracking, and if they already have cracks starting, can prevent them from getting worse.

Cosmetic Bonding (For Teens)
Cosmetic dental bonding is basically the process of filling or fixing teeth with a tooth-colored filling material in order to maintain appearance by way of a beautiful and natural smile. Tooth-colored fillings are made from durable plastics called composite resins. Similar in color and texture to natural teeth, the fillings are much less noticeable and much more attractive than other types of fillings. A tooth can be filled and sealed at the same time to prevent any decay. Your child can smile, talk, and eat with confidence.

Senior Care
While maintenance care plays an important role in good health throughout your life, it becomes more vital as you age. Fillings need to be checked periodically and replaced as needed, and regular cleanings are necessary to remove plaque and prevent periodontal disease.
When you do come in for a visit, it's important that you tell us if there have been any changes in your medical history. A recent illness or change in medication can lead to serious dental problems.

Implants
Dental implants are artificial substitutes for natural tooth roots, a ray of hope for toothless people. They are lightweight, metal devices surgically embedded in the gums or in the bone to which replacement teeth are attached.

The implant procedure involves the insertion of tiny titanium metal fixtures into the jawbone. These fixtures actually bond with the bone and hold permanent, prosthetic teeth. The new teeth remain in the mouth and can stay secure for years and years.

Conventional DenturesDental implants can offer a solution to people who have false teeth. But the implants offer the greatest hope for people who cannot function adequately with conventional dentures. The problems of such patients begin when the parts of the jawbone begin to shrink. This shrinking is called resorption. As a result, many people struggle with dentures that won't allow them to smile naturally, speak clearly, or chew comfortably.

Implants, on the other hand, can provide support for improved appearance, speech, comfort, and chewing ability. Dental implants aren't necessarily for everyone. For example, patients must be in good overall health; healthy gums and sufficient bone help support an implant.

Sports Care Participating in sports can be good for your mental and physical state, but hard on your teeth. Without the proper gear, playing in sports, even on a casual basis, can be a painful, costly experience. In contact sports especially, teeth can be fractured or knocked out or they can die if a hard blow is sustained. However, if you wear a mouthguards, the risk of oral injury can be dramatically reduced. For more information click Sports Dentistry .

Brighter SmilesPrescription drugs, along with other factors such as old fillings, tobacco, coffee, teas and colas also can cause teeth to look dull and stained, a condition which can be corrected with tooth whitening. Bleaching is a simple, easy procedure, done at home with supplies we provide.

At home tooth whitening systems has been in practice for many years. It is a relatively simple, inexpensive treatment that is very reliable. For some the improvement is little, while for most it's a lot. There are several systems available that involves making a custom fitted tray that fits over the teeth and holds the whitening solution. This tray is worn for 1-2 hours during the day, each day, for 2-3 weeks or until the maximum effect is reached.

The other two teeth whitening systems that our panel dental professionals offer, one is called BriteSmile and another is Zoom . It is an in-office procedure that accomplishes, in one hour visit, the same result as approximately two weeks of daily wear of the at home technique. The difference is more time in the chair (approximately 1½ hours), and the higher cost.

Orthodontics
Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment
The benefits of orthodontics reach far beyond the most obvious cosmetic improvement. During a child's younger years, the self-consciousness of an unattractive smile can produce long lasting effects on his or her self-esteem. In many cases orthodontic treatment can increase the child's self-confidence and interpersonal relationship effectiveness.

Early orthodontic treatment can guide facial growth for an improvement in not only the bite, but in the resulting profile. In some cases guidance of facial growth may eliminate the need for future facial or jaw surgery. Protruded front teeth run a greater risk of injury. Early treatment can reduce this risk. In some cases where teeth are missing, many times the spaces can be closed eliminating the need for replacement by bridges or implants.

In adults orthodontic treatment is sometimes indicated prior to the construction of crowns, bridges, implants, and veneers to provide proper construction and aesthetics of the prosthetic teeth. Periodontal treatment, in some cases, is improved with proper alignment of teeth.

ORAL CARE TIPS
Diet & Dental HealthDiets low in certain nutrients reduce resistance to oral and dental infections, that is, periodontal disease (gum disease) and decay. A healthy immune system is essential to controlling periodontal disease.

Counseling in the Four Basic Food groups will improve dental health and general health. The consumption of sugar, especially in sticky forms or in a baby bottle while sleeping, contributes to the rapid development of dental decay.

The trace nutrient fluoride may not be adequately supplied by bottle or municipal water supplies. Supplementation with oral tablets and topical application will reduce the incidence of dental decay by more than 60%.

Together, a balanced diet, daily use of fluoride under the guidance of dentist, effective brushing, and sensible eating habits can reduce the risk of, or even prevent, infectious dental disease.
