Dental Restorations
Simple term that definitions the dental restorations is any artificial structure that is used to replace part of a tooth, or whole tooth, aiming at preserving the function, appearance, and life of your natural teeth.

Dental restorations are an important and often overlooked part of dentistry. The phrase "nothing lasts forever" is especially true for dental restorations. When teeth are damaged through dental caries (decay or cavities), periodontal (gum) disease, trauma (injury), or simply breakage from internal weakening, restorations can give you a reason to smile.

If you have restorations in mouth, it is important to have routine checkups at recommended intervals. While many restorations like amalgams or that of gold can last 10, 20, or more years, even so, they must be replaced occasionally to best protect your teeth. Only the good oral hygiene helps maintain restorations and achieve the longest possible use from them. This assures protecting the underlying teeth as needed.

In many cases, you will not feel any symptoms of leakage under a restoration. But if you experience dull or sharp pain when chewing, it is times go calling to your dentist. Early identification and treatment of caries beneath restorations can save your teeth.

With the increased attention towards aesthetics is just another good reason to replace your old restorations. Some times it is blessing in disguise that while replacing the restorations it is found that the cement had started loosing grip that would have caused the crown to loosen up to also develop bite problems.

Different Types of Dental Restorations:
Different types of dental restorations are designed to do specific jobs; here is a breakdown of the most common:
  1. Sealants: A tooth coloured white filling materials used to fill the decay prone grooves of the back teeth (usually children 6-18 years), as a preventative procedure, to cover stain and to rebuild or change a tooth's shape.
  2. Fillings: When decay creates a cavity in the tooth, the dentist usually fills it with a durable material when aesthetics are not predominant. It can be gold or silver amalgam restorations that have proven high degree of durability. It could be composite (white) filling materials. Placed directly into the prepared tooth. Used where the existing fillings or areas of decay are small enough that the remaining tooth structure has not been overly weakened.
  3. Inlays: The situations for its use are similar to fillings except a pre-made piece of ceramic material is bonded into the tooth. This results in superior physical properties with lifespan longer than a composite filling. Inlays are a top-quality alternative to the composite filling. Traditionally gold alloy has been used for inlays, but now ceramics provide excellent esthetics as well.
  4. Onlays: The situations where the tooth is fractured or has been severely weakened, the onlays are used. It differs from inlays as ceramic covers the entire or most of the biting surface. Unlike a crown, it does not cover the entire visible tooth structure. The grinding is needed only when there is decay.
  5. Crowns ("Cap"): A crown is necessary for a tooth that has been weakened by decay or by recurrent fillings. It may also be required after Root Canal treatment. It covers all sides of the tooth as well as the end. It is used when there is limited tooth structure left, when an existing crown must be replaced, or when the tooth is an "anchor" tooth for a fixed bridge. It fits over a specially shaped tooth base and is usually made of gold, ceramic, or a combination of materials. In cases where it is impossible to get proper moisture control) below the gum line or near the back of the mouth), a cemented crown may substitute for a bonded one.
  6. Veneers: Thin porcelain facings that cover the front side of teeth. Veneers outperform bonding with greater resilience and a greater resistance to stains and dulling. Applying a thin layer of porcelain, composite resin or preformed plastic so that it adheres to the front surfaces of teeth. Used cosmetically to change the length, color and shape of teeth, are not at all felt expensive when aesthetic smile is the main consideration.
  7. Bridges: A bridge replaces a missing tooth by creating a false crown, attached to two other sufficient "anchor" crowns (teeth), that go on the teeth surrounding the missing tooth. Numerous systems are available, including fiber-reinforced ceramics, Zirconium-based ceramics and porcelain fused to metal bridges.
  8. Implants: Implants are the best solution for replacing missing teeth, but they are expensive and not everyone is a candidate for the procedure. These are Titanium posts surgically placed into the jawbone. Implants are used to support a dental prosthesis (from single crowns to full denture) once the bone grows around the post that usually takes 4-6 months after placement.
  9. Removable Partial Dentures: It is used to replace missing teeth when insufficient teeth remain to support fixed bridges or a patient does not test well for bridge materials. It is designed specifically to meet the needs of the patient. Esthetic appearance and speech is restored along with the ability to eat confidently and efficiently. Partial dentures can be metal or acrylic-based. Acrylic-based partials are bulkier and do not stay in place as well as metal partials. Metal partials can be made with precision attachments that eliminate the use of unsightly metal clasps. The design process involved in creating a removable partial (denture) is specific to the patient's needs.

  10. Removable Full Denture: Complete dentures or Full dentures are used when all the teeth are missing. Complete dentures can be either "conventional" or "immediate". The framework of complete dentures may be made of resin, metal or a combination. Implant supported overdentures are an alternate to conventional dentures whereby a full dentures is placed over the dental implants with metal bar/balls that gives better retention. Caution" most, but not all, acrylic bases contain cadmium, a toxic substance, as a color stabilizer.
