Dental Bonding
Dental bonding is a restorative procedure in which a plastic resin is applied to the front surface of a tooth to hide or repair a damaged tooth that is worn, chipped, decayed or discolored. In fact, worn or darkened "silver" fillings can be replaced with tooth-colored bonding materials that are indistinguishable from your natural tooth enamel. One type of resin is even used as a sealant to shield back teeth from decay. This procedure can improve the appearance of teeth in several ways. It can whiten stained teeth, lengthen short or chipped teeth, and fill in gaps between teeth. This method works well with brownish or grayish-tinged teeth, which do not always respond to bleaching.

Bonding is among the easiest and least expensive of cosmetic dental procedures. The tooth surface is etched with a mild acidic solution. This creates micro pores (tiny crevices in the enamel), making the tooth more porous and receptive to the plastic bonding material. After treating the damaged tooth surface, the dentist applies a puttylike tooth colored material called composite resin onto the tooth that is then sculpted and shaped. A high-intensity light causes the plastic to harden after which the new surface is smoothed and polished to the matching luster.

Bonding can lighten stains, close gaps and even alter the natural flaws like crooked or malformed teeth. In fact, worn or darkened "silver" fillings can be replaced with tooth-colored bonding materials that are indistinguishable from your natural tooth enamel. One type of resin is even used as a sealant to shield back teeth from decay. By applying the dental aesthetics approach, the dentist may change the shape or color of a single tooth or if necessary to remake your entire smile.

Bonding can work wonders for discoloured teeth not changed by bleaching. The procedure is typically painless and can yield dramatic results in a single office visit.

Before: A noticeable space between the front teeth.
After: Bonding fills the space, but still keeps the teeth looking natural.

Advantages:

Aesthetics is the main advantage. Bonding provides support to the remaining tooth structure, which helps to prevent breakage and insulate the tooth from excessive temperature changes. Bonding procedures are advantageous because one or more teeth can be corrected.

Risk and disadvantages:

Composite resin restorations have their limitations. The composite resin used in bonding isn't nearly as strong as a natural tooth. After receiving a composite, a patient may experience post-operative sensitivity. The dentist can put a clear plastic coating over the composite to prevent the color from changing if a patient is particularly concerned about tooth color. Composites tend to wear out sooner than silver fillings in larger cavities, although they hold up as well in small cavities.

Biting your fingernails or chewing on ice or pens can chip the material. Bonding usually lasts several years before it needs to be repaired. How long it actually lasts depends on how much bonding was done and your oral habits. Also, the shade of the composite can change slightly if the patient drinks tea, coffee or other staining foods. Proper home care and regular professional cleanings are essential to keep the restored teeth healthy and beautiful.
