Tartar, sometimes called
calculus, is an accumulation of mineral deposits and hardened plaque,
the colorless substance that forms on everyone's teeth daily. As
tartar forms, it creates a rough surface that attracts plaque, making
it more difficult to clean your teeth well. Tartar is an accumulation
of hardened plaque and mineral deposits, yellow or brown in color
that can only be removed by your dentist or hygienist.
Over time, tartar can also form underneath the gum line. If this occurs,
the plaque acids contained in the tartar irritate the gums which can
lead to gum disease.
Not only can tartar threaten gum health, it is also a cosmetic problem
due to its brown or yellow color. Tartar absorbs stains easily so,
if you are a coffee or tea drinker, or if you smoke, it is especially
important to brush and floss your teeth properly.
How can I prevent tartar buildup?
Once tartar has formed, only your dentist or hygienist can remove
it. The process of removing tartar is called a prophylaxis. The
dentist or hygienist uses a special instrument to clean your teeth
above and below the gum line. However, proper brushing with some
toothpaste meant for removing it and flossing can help reduce plaque
and tartar buildup. The formula of such toothpastes interrupts the
order of tartar's structure, reducing its buildup.
