Adults
The most common cause for loose teeth among adults is Gum
Disease. If this is the case, then you should see your
doctor immediately for ensuing treatment to prevent any further problems
to your teeth and underlying gums! If you are not currently receiving
treatment for Gum Disease, and you are experiencing loose teeth, contact
us for a Gum Disease screening appointment. The most common causes
for loose teeth are:
Periodontal (Gum) Disease: When there is an accumulation
of food debris on your gums, it will attract bacteria causing gingivitis.
Bacterial infection of the gums will spread to the fibrous tissue
beneath the teeth and alveolar bone. If left untreated, more and more
bone is destroyed surrounding the teeth and can cause a gum abscess,
which will result in loose teeth since the teeth are no longer stabilized
by the bone and surrounding tissue.
Accident/Trauma: Accidents to the head and mouth, resulting
in blunt injury to the tooth structure can cause loosening of the
teeth. Also, the trauma from teeth grinding (bruxism) can cause loose
teeth. Also teeth may also become loose during orthodontic treatment.
The widening of ligaments that hold teeth in their sockets also cause
loose teeth due to the pressure from orthodontic wires of braces.
A tumor
of the bone, which causes destruction to the bony architecture, also
results in loose teeth.
If your tooth remains loose and is causing discomfort and pain,
then they many be splinted. Splinting is a process where the teeth
are joined together to increase their stability and strength.
Children
The most common cause for loose teeth in children is erupting permanent
teeth. If a baby tooth becomes loose after a minor injury, it will
often feel tight again within a few days. Teeth that are slightly
loose usually heal well in 1 to 2 weeks. Have your child eat soft
foods such as:
Milk and dairy products, such as milk shakes, yogurt, custards,
ice cream, sherbets, or cottage cheese.
Meat and meat substitutes, such as tender meats or chicken,
tuna, eggs, or smooth peanut butter.
Fruits and vegetables, such as well-cooked or canned fruits
and vegetables; well-ripened, easy-to-chew fruits; and baked,
mashed, or well-cooked sweet potatoes.
As permanent teeth begin to erupt, the roots of the primary teeth
(baby teeth) dissolve and the teeth become loose. Primary teeth
will generally fall out at the appropriate time. But if a primary
tooth doesn't fall out soon after the permanent tooth erupts,
contact us so we can prevent complications from a retained primary
tooth. Your child may be tempted to wiggle a loose tooth, and
that is fine, but do not apply any significant pressure to a primary
tooth to hasten it's removal. The primary teeth play an important
role in guiding the permanent teeth into proper position.
A permanent tooth that has been jammed into the gum generally
requires treatment. A loose permanent tooth can cause problems.
A permanent tooth that has become very loose after an injury needs
to be evaluated by a dentist to prevent tooth loss and help the
tooth heal. If a tooth becomes loose because of grinding the teeth,
the grinding problem can be treated by a dentist to prevent additional
injury.
