Loose Fit
Due to shrinkage of jawbone and surrounding gum tissue, the gums and
bone do not support the dentures to rest properly on the ridge causing
cheek and tongue to struggle to form words and control the dentures
while speaking or chewing. Some foods may never be ‘easy to
chew’ with dentures, but lack of adequate chewing could be related
to the alignment of your upper and lower denture(s), or your denture
with natural teeth, this effects the “balance” of the
denture on the tissues and muscles of the mouth. In combination with
shrinkage of tissue, poor alignment creates improper denture function.
Over time, that ridge will shrink causing the dentures to no longer
fit properly. However, if the denture or partial is worn or brittle,
or if the change in the ridge is significant, a new denture or partial
may need to be fabricated in order to obtain a proper fit. If there
are tooth roots that have been retained to hold the denture (Overdenture)
or if implants have been placed to hold the denture (Implant-Retained
Denture), or if it is a Partial
Denture, the ridge will not shrink as rapidly as with
a Complete
Denture, but there will still be some change over time.
This causes the denture or partial to become loose. A denture or partial
can be relined to make it fit properly.
Sore Spot
As gums change over time, a sore spot will occasionally develop due
to changes in how the denture or partial rests on the gums. Pressure
and / or rubbing is occurring in one specific area, usually a result
of chewing, as explained above, but may also be due to clenching of
teeth or bruxism (grinding the teeth). Other causes may be hard foods
(like small seeds) getting under the denture or denture teeth that
need adjustment. If a sore spot develops, make an appointment for
an adjustment or relining of your denture or partial. Loss of vertical
support for the denture (bone loss) can cause the mouth to “over-close.”
This can change the way the lips seal together and cause saliva to
pool at the corners of the mouth. The excess moisture in this area
may cause the skin to become irritated and may increase the risk of
a candida (fungus) infection.
Discolored Dentures
Dentures get bacteria build-up on them, just like natural teeth. To
keep dentures from warping, always remove them at night and soak them
in water. You can use a cleansing agent all night on full dentures,
but partials that have visible metal on them should only be soaked
for 15 minutes. Follow a regular daily regimen of cleaning both your
dentures and natural teeth as well as cleaning and massaging your
gums and see your dentist regularly. If all of the stain and bacteria
can't be removed, bring the dentures and or partials to our office
to be professionally cleaned.
Bad Odor
Patients who wear dentures also suffer from bad breath. Dentures can
absorb bacteria and fluids that cause offensive odors to develop.
The cause for this is usually because the dentures are not kept clean.
If your dentures appear to be clean but have an odor, contact us for
advice on some simple remedies for removing these odors. In general,
the dentures need to be left out at night in water. Before they are
worn in the morning they should be washed in a mild detergent, with
a denture brush. The gums, roof of the mouth should be brushed and
a tongue scrapper or toothbrush used to clean the tongue.
Broken or Chipped Denture
Chips or fractures in your dentures or partials can sometimes be easily
repaired. Just bring them to dentist office for evaluation.
